Our youngest pupils participate in many physical activities including; Busy Feet dance sessions, wake and shake movement sessions, PE Sessions in Reception with our specialist sports coach Mr. Davies and daily running (working towards the Golden Mile)
All children participate in at least 1.5 hours of PE weekly. Lessons are taught by class teachers, but also by our excellent and highly qualified PE coach, Mr Davies, who work with our pupils every week throughout the school year.
Y1 & Y2 pupils swim weekly at Lamas Leisure Centre. This wonderful opportunity is enhanced by high quality tuition from our instructors. This ensures that all of our KS1 children quickly build confidence and enjoyment of the water and learn to swim quickly and efficiently.
All pupils in Years 3 and 4 continue to enjoy weekly swimming sessions. This allows them to become strong and proficient swimmers. Many go on to become county swimmers and as a school we have been Nottinghamshire county finalists in 3 of the last 7 years. Sam Hynd’s Beijing gold and Olly Hynd’s London gold in the Paralympic pool speak volumes about swimming at Orchard.
All children participate in at least two hours of PE weekly. Mr Davies, our highly qualified PE coach, works with Key Stage Two classes everyday throughout the week.
Mr Davies was appointed in September 2014 to work with us and three other local schools as part of a package to build upon the hugely successful and influential 2012 London Olympics and Paralympics. His brief - with assistance from other members of staff, is as follows:
PE & Sport for All – at orchard, we strive to promote physical literacy, key fundamental movement and key values of the School Games ethos (honesty, determination, self –belief, passion, respect and teamwork). We achieve this alongside encouraging a healthy, active lifestyle throughout their time at Orchard and beyond.
Competitive Edge - to finely hone those skills to enable as many pupils as possible to compete either individually or as part of school teams with pupils from other schools in the area or county. In terms of sporting prowess, we punch well above our weight and it’s no accident that we currently boast two gold medal Paralympic swimmers and a world Kick-boxing champion amongst our former pupils.
We have been awarded this wonderful accolade for the past two years! We are building on this further in school by introducing the ‘Golden Mile’ to all of our pupils. This initiative enables all pupils to actively increase their daily amount of strenuous activity.
All children are expected to change for PE and will require an indoor and outdoor PE kit.
Indoor: plimsolls, shorts and a house colour T-shirt (these are either, red, green, yellow or purple)The first T-Shirt for Reception children is provided. Subsequent ones are available to buy from the school office.
Outdoor: trainers, plain dark jogging bottoms or tracksuit (colder months) and house colour T-shirt.
Children will need to keep their PE kit in a drawstring bag on their peg. There is no room in the cloakrooms to bring larger bags. Drawstring PE bags are available from the school office.
