At Orchard, our intention is that all children are taught to develop an interest in learning other languages in an enjoyable and stimulating way. Learning a language encourages children’s curiosity and creative skills and helps them to develop communication skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing, with an aim of making substantial progress in one language. In addition, children’s knowledge of how language works will be developed to lay the foundations for further language learning in future.

We believe that learning another language gives children a new and broader perspective on the world and enables them to understand their own cultures and those of others. Children are encouraged and supported to unlock their resilience and teamwork keys through conversational work, singing activities and games. As confidence and skill grows, children record their work through pictures, captions and sentences. 

Our planning is based on the Primary French Project scheme which meets the requirements of the Programme of Study for Languages in Key Stage 2. It is the intention that all children in KS2 will access first quality teaching of French in order to adequately prepare them for KS3.
