Phonics
Throughout EYFS and Key Stage One, children will be immersed in the delivery of frequent, high quality phonics teaching. This follows the ‘Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised’ programme of progression, which provides children with a firm foundation for reading spelling and writing. Access to decodable reading books from the beginning of a child’s learning journey, not only offers children a chance to apply and consolidate previously taught skills but also promotes a love of reading. In addition to phonics, children learn de-coding skills; how to segment words and sound them out with increasing fluency and accuracy, as well as recognising common words on sight. They also learn comprehension skills, how to understand what they read and how to use these skills to infer meaning and deduce information.
